Why “Be yourself” is shit advice

Because if you feel like you’re a loser, then being yourself just means being a loser and that’s not cool.

Because if you think that you suck, then being yourself means sucking even more.

Because a lot of people who dish out this advice are already successful in life and then they make it out like it’s so easy when it’s really not.

Because if you lack confidence, you can’t really be your true self that way.

Because most people use it as an excuse to not get out of their comfort zone i.e. “This feels really scary. It’s therefore so not me! I shouldn’t bother trying all this new shit out. Let me just be myself instead.”

Because most people use it as an excuse to not learn new things.

Because sometimes, life calls you to NOT be yourself and do things differently. If you insist on being yourself all the time and hence be really difficult, then you’re just an annoying, self-entitled brat.

Because sometimes, you need to learn from others. That means humbling yourself and putting you on the side bench for a bit.

Because it’s a lot easier said than done, for reasons I’ve stated everywhere in this article.

Because you can’t really be yourself if you don’t even know who the fuck you really are.

Ready to learn and become super awesome? Be yourself, yet be everything then.

Really like reading your post. You had all the interesting views. True enough, sometimes people need to model someone else for a little while.

The “be yourself” advice usually just means that you should be confident in who you are and not worry about other people’s standards and preconceptions of you. Perhaps it would be better stated as, “be the best version of yourself,” which you could only find with an open mind, aspiration, and experimentation.
